The Fairfax County Planning Commission on Jan. 24 approved a project to renovate and expand the Mason Police Station.

The police station shares a building with the Mason Government Center at 6507 Columbia Pike.

A temporary facility with a mobile office unit and a service vehicle canopy in the parking lot will be used during construction. The temporary facility will take up 31 parking spaces.

The secondary access point at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Whispering Lane will be closed during construction.

A 4,567-square-foot addition to the police station will increase the size of the building to 34,596 square feet. The section of the building containing the Mason Supervisor’s office and meeting rooms will not be expanded, although some exterior improvements are planned.

The project includes a larger crime tech lab, alcohol testing area, and evidence lockers. There will be space for four additional patrol officers.

The project will incorporate green building design improvements including solar canopies and efforts to achieve Net-Zero Energy Building Classification I and LEED Gold Certification. There will be 18 new electric vehicle charging stations.

The expansion is needed, according to county staff, because the population has increased since the police station was built in 1974, and calls for service have greatly increased, as well.

Applications for public facility projects (2232 plans) do not need Board of Supervisors approval.

    How about enforce the law?

    1. The Fairfax County police can arrest all the individuals who commit violent crimes in Fairfax County and it won’t make a difference if the Commonwealth Attorney won’t prosecute the alleged violent criminals, and successfully obtain convictions for those who are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
