Planning commissioner Alcorn selected FXCO Citizen of the Year; Annandale blogger honored, too

The Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations has selected Planning Commission Vice President Walter Acorn as the 2011 Citizen of the Year.
The federation is honoring Alcorn, a resident of Reston who has served as an at-large member of the Planning Commission since 1997, in recognition of his leadership in revising the county’s complex plan for the redevelopment of Tysons Corner.
“Commissioner Alcorn’s proactive encouragement of public participation in the planning process and his consensus-building style of leadership helped bring competing interests together for a better future of Fairfax County residents,” said federation President Tania Hossain.
In addition, the federation is presenting 2011 Citation of Merit awards to three community leaders:
- Ellie Ashford of Annandale for enhancing dialogue on diverse issues, such as land use, schools, and crime through her community-based Annandale Blog [hey, that’s me!];
- Corazon Foley of Springfield for championing the creation of a Senior Center Without Walls, which promotes the health and well-being of elder residents in West Springfield and Burke; and
- Terry Maynard of Reston for leading the redevelopment of Reston and advocating for Metro’s silver line.
The federation will also present a Special Gratitude Award to Suzanne Harsel, who has represented the Braddock District on the Planning Commission for more than 30 years.
Alcorn and the other honorees will be recognized at the annual Citizen of the Year Awards Banquet, sponsored by the federation and SAIC, on March 25 at the Tysons Corner Crowne Plaza Hotel. The banquet is open to the public, and all Annandale blog readers are encouraged to come.
“Encouraging the volunteer engagement of Fairfax County citizens, including the thousands of our employees and their families here, is a major objective of our community relations,” said Douglas Koelemay, vice president of SAIC (Science Applications International Corp.).
Last year, the federation presented its Citizen of the Year Award to Mason District community activist Mollie Loeffler, who also happens to be the Annandale Blog’s advertising director.
The federation, established in 1940, is the countywide voice for homeowner, civic, and community associations. The all-volunteer organization works on issues that affect Fairfax County residents, including education, transportation, the environment, human services, land use, the county budget, and state and federal legislative issues.

Congratulations, Ellie…so well-deserved! The blog informs us of local happenings we might otherwise never learn about, especially on issues which affect our community environment, local events, etc. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Neighborhoods that never knew what was going on in the one next to them are now linked together and know one another.
