The Fairfax County Planning Commission approved a special exception zoning application Sept. 13 to allow the Calvary Church of the Nazarene to open an adult daycare center.
The church is at 8220 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, next to the Camelot and Mill Creek neighborhoods.
There was virtually no discussion, and no one from the community spoke at the public hearing. The Board of Supervisors will consider the proposal Sept. 25. The Mason District Land Use Committee endorsed it in July.
The church is not requesting any structural changes – just a new use in its existing facility.
The daycare program would be operated by the Friends Health Care Team, a company based in Annandale that primarily provides home-based health aides.
The proposed adult day care center would be offered six days a week and would provide recreation, socialization, and educational activities.
Enrollment would be limited to 99 participants. The hours of operation would be 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. About 30 percent of the participants would be transported to the center in mini-vans or buses.
One potential conflict identified by Fairfax County Planning and Zoning staff is the monthly worship service held by the church on Saturdays, which could make access and parking difficult.
As a result, the Planning Commission included a development condition requiring the church “to be responsible when scheduling activities that may conflict with the adult day care center’s hours of operation.”
