PNC, other banks are shutting down

The former PNC Bank at the Giant in Graham Park Plaza.

PNC Bank is closing 127 branches in grocery stores nationwide this year, many of them in Virginia. It’s part of a trend, as branches have been shutting down nationwide.

According to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which reports bank closures, these branches inside Giant stores were scheduled to close on June 23:

  • PNC inside the Giant at 6360 Seven Corners Center.
  • PNC inside the Giant at 7235 Arlington Blvd. in Graham Park Plaza.
  • PNC inside the Giant at 1230 Broad St., Falls Church.

The PNC bank at the Giant in Landmark Plaza in Lincolnia is scheduled to close in July.

The Wells Fargo Bank branch at 4260 John Marr Drive is set to close on July 26. The Wells Fargo in the Willston Shopping Center closed in early spring.

According to Insider Intelligence, 7,425 bank branches closed between 2017 and 2021. A third of the closures were in minority-majority communities.

Banks shut down branches because of shrinking profits due to decades of low interest rates and a massive migration to digital banking triggered by the pandemic. Mergers and acquisitions are also a factor, including the merger of SunTrust and BB&T to create Truist.

  1. WTOP just reported that “landover based giant” is considering closing stores due to crime. Put the pieces together.

  2. Well, if you are “old school” & prefer to bank in person you are sadly being screwed out of that option. Banking online only works if Every bill you have, can be paid online. If it has to be a sent check or actual visit to a bank, you’re beat ! That totally sucks

    1. There’s very very very few instances where a paper check is necessary…. Thankfully. Why would you want to be around PEOPLE anyway??? Ewwww.

    2. BoA will cut a check if the payee doesnt accept digital transfers. It just takes longer for payment to arrive, of course.

  3. I was a banker for over 40 years. Banks have been moving in that direction for most of that time. Direct deposit, ATM machines, check capture with your phone, cash apps debit and credit cards and online banking all serve that purpose. I won’t be surprised if the move to a cashless society is quickened. They’re already tracking spending habits. The move accelerated after 9/11, mostly out of necessity. I am sad for the clients (in particular the older ones) who prefer the face to face and social aspect of the process.

  4. I was a banker for 45 years in customer service. It is a h u g h mistake to do away with in person banking the older Crown has the Money and need extra .i had about 500 clients and let me tell him one thing that keeps the banks in business. You need to rethink all this outside banking .

  5. Who wants to stand in the middle of a convenience store and do their banking in an ATM. I will find another bank or credit union.

  6. I think what you are doing sucks!!!! Everyone deserves a choice as to how they want to bank. P.n.c. deserves to lose every customer they have over this nonsense

  7. It seems like bank will be stealing the costumer’s money. Right out in broth day light , this country is going backwards . Business wise. Some body half to step. Up and fix the problem. We do need the one on one business .

    Transaction hand or fist.

  8. I moved from Locust Grove to Middletown California 1 year ago. Recently I was unable to access my account and was told by phone that it would get fixed, but it was not. I would like to close the account but cannot locate a location nearby. Can you please close my account and sent me a statement and a check for the remaining funds in my business and personal account? I’d appreciate your help as I have cancer and am medicated most of the time.

  9. Hate to let you know how GREAT Bank Of America at 50 and 7 is because all of you will go there!! They are very busy the majority of time. From the manager to the teller’s and the individual agents-polite, willing to listen to your needs. You walk in and the Manager asks what you need and guides you to tellers or sitting and waiting to see the next agent in their individual office. Extremely helpful!!

  10. PNC & other banks are not thinking smarter. Following age old practice of closures will not solve problems nor attract new customers or keep old ones.
In fact it promotes to drive them away. Doing the opposite having their investments support their activities will create confidence and continue long term growth.
But their not investing and getting a 2x or 10x return so they are blind to the current and future trends so they rely on old outdated tactics that will not allow them to survive as strong brick and mortar banks & trust that investments will support daily activities and long term growth.

  11. I was locked out of online banking for 2 mos!!! Thank god I keep and require paper statements! The only account I didn’t have paper was myPNC credit card that they blocked!!! Had to call them to pay it. Demanded my card paper statements turned on. What if grids cracks, pnc servers die? I would then have to call every single account to pay my electric, gas…cards?

  12. I will miss the Wells Fargo staff at the John Marr branch. They have always been professional, friendly, and helpful. Face to face contact is very important, especially when there are questions are problems that need to be solved.

  13. I work in banking, and the only time I ever set foot in a brick and mortar branch is when I have something that needs to be notarized. I carry a little cash on me, but I usually only spend it when traveling to tip valets, etc.

  14. While PNC is exiting their in-store relationship with Giant, they have just opened two brick and mortar stores. One in Kingstowne and one in West Springfield. I think I saw another one planned for Reston soon.

The “closure” story is not the whole story.

    1. I imagine the agreement is expiring, and PNC doesn’t feel it is cost effective to continue it. If they still want to bank in person, consumers are usually better served by whatever community bank or credit union that’s convenient to them than they are with a large bank.

  15. PNC deserves to go under. They were horrible to my sister who was an employee for years and their customer service sucks

  16. I live in a small town in Pennsylvania, they shut down our bank, then shut down the bank in the town next to us and all the other ones nearby. Now if we want to bank at PNC, we have to drive 30-40 mins. They say they are a small town bank for our community, that is a joke
