Police investigating death of child left in back seat of car
Detectives are investigating the death of a two-year-old who had reportedly been accidentally left on the back seat of a car by a caretaker in Annandale. An initial investigation determined that a male acquaintance of the child’s mother was supposed to drop three children off at two locations on the morning of April 20. It appears he dropped off two older children, ages 10 and 15, not realizing that the two-year-old remained on the back seat of the car.
Sometime later, the man got back in the car to pick up the children’s mother in Arlington. When he arrived at her location, he looked in the back seat area of the car and saw the child. When he discovered that she was unresponsive, he immediately called 911. Arlington County police, fire, and rescue personnel responded and subsequently called Fairfax County authorities.
Update: The Washington Post reported that Daiquan Fields, 32, of Annandale, was charged with manslaughter.
Fairfax County Child Protective Services has removed the two older children and placed them with a relative pending the investigation. The Arlington County Police Department is taking the lead in the investigation; Fairfax County detectives will provide assistance.
On April 20, two men were arrested in connection with a robbery at Shoppers Food Warehouse in the Plaza at Landmark shopping center on Little River Turnpike. They entered the store at about 9:20 a.m., assaulted an employee, took property, and fled. The victim was uninjured.
Both suspects were apprehended. Mohamed Bishmar, 20, of Annandale was charged with robbery. Arwaad Elmi Nur, 20, of Alexandria, was charged with being drunk in public, having an open container, and robbery.
There was a robbery in the 5800 block of Oakview Gardens Drive in Bailey’s Crossroads at 3:50 a.m. on April 15. The victim was walking on a sidewalk at the Oakview Garden Apartments when he was approached by two black males. The suspects pushed the victim to the ground, assaulted him, took property, and fled on foot. The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects were described as black, 20 to 30 years old, approximately 180 to 200 pounds, and wearing dark clothing.
On April 17, an Annandale resident, Julio C. Bacajol Canel, 22, was charged with destruction of property and unlawful entry after a resident observed him exiting a basement door of a home in the 7300 block of Backlick Road in Springfield.
