Pro Maxx brings fitness to Annandale

Pro MAXX Fitness, the gym in the Annandale Shopping Center on Columbia Pike, has opened just in time for those of us planning a more active, healthier lifestyle in 2013.

If you used to work out at the old Maxx Fitness in that spot, you won’t recognize the new Maxx. It’s been totally redesigned with a color scheme, weight machines, locker rooms, classrooms, and child-minding room. The old gym closed a year ago. Foundation Fitness, which leased space in the old gym has relocated to 7232 Columbia Pike.

Under the “pre-grand-opening sale,” individual membership rates are $35 a month with a $65 enrollment fee ($485 a year) on a month-to-month basis or $425 a year paid in full.

The introductory fee for fire and rescue personnel, military, police, seniors, students, and teachers is $30 a month plus a $65 enrollment fee on a month-to-month basis. Pro MAXX Fitness Managing Member Susan J. Hilaski says there will always be a discount for those groups. There are also family and corporate memberships. All membership packages include two personal training sessions, two guest passes, and access to aerobics classes.

Another opening special is $99 for three one-hour one-on-one personal training sessions. The regular price is $225

Pro MAXX Fitness offers high-energy classes, including Body Attack (a sports-inspired cardio workout), Body Jam (a dance-inspired cardio workout), Turbo Kick, Zumba (an intense workout involving dance moves), Body Sculpt, and Power Flow Yoga—plus weightlifting coaching by former Olympian Ahmed Ragheb, a co-owner of the former Maxx Fitness.

“We are thrilled to finally be open for business after overcoming a number of construction-related challenges and permit delays throughout the year,” said Hilaski.

The aerobics room.

“We are confident that our new customers and returning former MAXX Fitness members will appreciate our completely remodeled facility offering state-of-the-art cardio equipment, new strength equipment, luxurious design features, and other club amenities,” says Hilaski, a member of the Annandale Volunteer Department and Annandale Chamber of Commerce. “We worked extremely hard to create an upscale fitness experience for our clientele at an affordable price while keeping sustainability in mind.”

ProMaxx is open New Year’s Eve 6 a.m.-6 p.m. and New Year’s Day 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Regular hours are 5 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Wow what a terrible value compared to XSport Fitness down the road. I'm paying $15 more for 18 months vs their year long package there. Xsport also has 4 local locations (many in NY and Chicago area too) all of which I can use whenever I want 24/7/365. Xsport also has a lap pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna not to mention is like 3 times the size of this place. The one in Merrifield also has a free rock climbing wall and they all have an indoor basketball court too. There is something great about not having to work your schedule around a gym's hours, and this place closes way way way too early Friday-Sunday, I mean 8 p.m.? Come on!

This place around went out of business once, I would not be shocked to see it close again. I'd hate for someone to pay several hundred dollars upfront for a full year membership, then have the place go under 6-7 months into their membership. Its a very small, overpriced for what you get gym. Trust me, small gyms mean waiting while somebody uses the only piece of a certain equipment there. You either end up doing something else that you didn't want to use, or you stand around and lessen the impact of your workout. Unless you live within walking distance and hate to or can't drive, look at other places and compare.

  2. Pro MAXX Fitness is under new ownership. It is the only gym in the area offering discounts to fire and rescue and military personnel, police officers, active seniors, teachers and students. The owners are highly active in the community in which they reside and serve.

Membership prices are published on the website for all to see unlike other fitness centers and there are no hidden fees. It is highly suspicious for someone to comment on Pro MAXX and reference another club that does not even list their pricing structure on their website.

The members who belong to Pro MAXX Fitness appreciate the value it provides. It is not too small like a personal training studio where a lot of effort is spent to capture sales nor is it a giant gym where you feel like just a number. Some people still like to be greeted with a smile and by their name. At Pro MAXX, you will be properly welcomed by professionals who truly care about your experience.

Members at Pro MAXX have direct access to the owners which makes a significant difference when a customer has an issue to address. Business decisions are based on member needs not on corporate goals or policies. The facility has all of the necessary equipment and team support for members to accomplish their health and fitness goals.

The company participates in the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) Passport Program allowing their members to use a variety of health clubs within the United States and worldwide at discounted rates.

A significant investment was made at this space resulting in a spa-like and welcoming atmosphere. The recycling efforts are a thoughtful touch too. In order to know the value of something, you should experience it for yourself instead of being misled by someone who clearly has not been to this gym.

  3. With all due respect, you guys are running a bare bones gym but yet still charging $35 a month, what one would pay at a normal chain. I have a strong feeling that was a direct result in the place shutting down the first time around. If somebody wants just the basics, why would they not just join Planet Fitness and pay $10-15 per month? They would still get a bigger gym and use of multiple facilities? I wrote my initial review for people, so they'd know the facts. I'd hate to see somebody sign up then realize how much they're overpaying. People should know that your gym closed once before, especially if you want them to fork over several hundred dollars for a membership.

There is also a difference in having a piece or two of popular equipment and having enough for many people to use at once. Any real gym would know that waiting around while somebody else is using a machine lessens your workout as you cool off. Small gyms = you'd better show off during off hours or you'll end up sharing all the time.

Closing at 8 p.m. on Friday and weekends is laughable at best.

There really isn't anything about this place that says great or even decent value. I'm paying $30 a month with no enrollment fee and I get full spa use, indoor basketball, use of every gym location etc. etc. etc. Maybe you guys will get lucky and draw in people who like paying more while getting significantly less for their money, I hear there are tons of those out there.

  4. Very excited to see this gym re-opening! Can't wait to get working out at ProMaxx Fitness! And the improvements to the gym are great!

  5. It seems as if the negative writer is trying to promote businesses. It seems he has an axe to grind. I have seen the gym with both its old and new owners and must say that the new owners are much more pleasant. The value is much better not to mention it looks a million percent better. Can't wait to realize my fitness goals in this state of the art facility. Out with the old, in with the new and I'm loving it. Great way to bring in the new year!

  6. I cannot believe anyone would say anything negative about pro maxx fitness. Its far better now than when it was maxx fitness. The new owners are awesome. They even have olympic medals from one of the owners who also personally trains people. That alone is priceless! I love working out here. I've visited a small gym down the street and ill just keep my comments to myself about that place.

  7. The best gym with the lowest prices and biggest variety of equipment and classes is not a good value if its not convenient to get to – like in traffic-clogged Merrifield. If its to much of a hassle to drive there, people won't go as often.

  8. Yeah LOL I own like 25 Xsport Fitness gyms around the country, nice one. I am worth tens of millions of dollars but just happen to live in Annandale, classic response. If you get done posting fake business reviews maybe you can address why your great business spent a year out of business. Magically how it reopened with the same name, same location, and same guy working there as before but it's under new management.

  9. I agree that $35 is too much considering you can get two months at planet fitness for the same price as one month here. You can get unlimited tanning and use all their locations too.

If you guys want to last in this area, $25 per is much more realistic. In this economy people will travel if they can save around $200 plus per year.

  10. These negative comments are so sad. I am from this community and love to support businesses in this community. I have visited this gym and love it! Everyone there is so nice. Perhaps instead of bashing, we should be congratulating. The way I see it, $35 is less than 2 bucks a day and less than 10 a week. We spend more than that on burgers and fries. I'll continue to support this gym and hope others will too.

  11. Maybe because $20 for a better gym is a better value. This isnt 1999, people are literally scrimping and saving every dollar they can in this economy. Most people don't have $150-200 a year to burn just so they can support a business that they like. This is especially true when the owner has a Hummer parked out in front of the gym.

    1. Since both the pro and con comments are anonymous, the back-and-forth here is pretty confusing. But you clearly have a pretty personal ax to grind, and it really doesn't reflect well on you. (Perhaps that's why you're anonymous.)

What do I mean by personal? You're critiquing the owner's choice of automobile, for heaven's sake. FYI, Wikipedia says the last Hummer was built in May 2010, and 2010 was the last model year. My sense is that lots of business owners have been driving 3-4-5 year old cars over the past few years.

I'm not affiliated with the gym in any way. But I live here, would like to see the community do well, and even if this gym isn't your cup of tea, I'd rather it be there than an empty storefront, like at the other end of the same center (Bloom). I really wish we knew your motivation for these multiple negative comments, because they're out of proportion for the reasons you've expressed to date.

  12. love the Gym, the location, very friendly Staff.
Not sure about the negative comments. but i will say its way better the the old Gym…. Love it..

  13. I am the proud owner of the new Pro MAXX Fitness, and I appreciate all the feedback that community members have posted about our new gym. We are a different company than the prior one (Maxx Fitness), and welcome you to check out our redesigned facilities in person. We believe that our prices are very competitive for the area and invite you to try the new equipment and meet our friendly staff. If you have any questions about the new ownership or facilities, or would like information about our various discounts and promotional offers, please contact me at [email protected] or call 703-914-9080.

  14. I did not experience the old version, but it is just that – old. The new owners are so nice and really took the time to create a facility the neighborhood has been craving. They have free weights, strength training machines, tons of brand new cardio equipment, a fabulous training staff and a wonderful group exercise schedule. Their locker rooms and child care facilities are state of the art. And the best part is that they take the time to learn your name and make you feel important when you go there. Whenever I workout I leave with a smile on my face. I can't say that about the larger gyms in the area. Plus their prices are right in line with other facilities in the area offering like amenities. I recommend Pro Maxx to everyone in the area and hope you all support a local small business. See you at the gym!

  15. The last time the place was open, they quickly shut down and some people did not get a full refund. The under new management thing is total BS too. They may have changed the name on the lease, but the same guy who owned it before is still there.

Yes, it does bother me when I see a guy driving an expensive car who within recent history didn't properly refund his customers because he couldn't or didn't want to properly finance his business. Now the business is magically back up in the same location with the same name, but we're supposed to believe its a totally new business? If you want to go ahead and purchase a year of membership upfront, don't complain when 6-8 months from now the place closes up again and you don't get reimbursed for your unused fees. It closed down the first time for a reason, it is small and overpriced. People don't pay more for less in bad economies. Other gyms offer equal services for less and others offer significantly more for the same price. Maybe you'll get lucky and your credit card company or bank will do a chargeback when they shut down and fight you over repayment.

  16. Again, this is Susan Hilaski, one of the new owners of Pro MAXX Fitness, and I can ensure you that we are here to stay. We have expended extensive resources in building a wonderful facility and investing in state-of-the art equipment for our valued customers. We are excited to have community members enjoy their improved experience with us. It is unfortunate that certain posters continue to spread misinformation about our ownership. If any consumer has any concerns about this location's ownership change, we are happy to discuss it with you. I am available by email at: [email protected] or by telephone at: 703-914-9080.

  17. I am an Annandale/Alexandria resident and I plan on pursuing a membership at this gym. The comments submitted by the anonymous person unfortunately lead me to believe that he/she has a personal axe to grind. The value of anything is relative to what each individual personally gains from their experience. I, for example, am not a good match for a large gym as I “get lost.” My best value is to pay a little more for a smaller gym which provides me with the personal relationships and support of a staff who knows me. I plan to support this small business and I congratulate them on their future successes! I want to be a part of that!

  18. I AM AN OFFICER WITH XSPORT FITNESS. WE DO NOT CONDONE ANY COMMENTS MADE BY "ANONYMOUS". PRO-MAXX IS A COMPETITOR THAT WE FEEL IS ATTEMPTING TO FILL A MARKET NICHE THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN OURS. IT IS MUCH TOO SOON FOR ANYONE TO FAIRLY COMMENT ON THEIR OPERATIONS AS THEY JUST OPENED AND AS WITH ANY NEW BUSINESS CAN TAKE SOME TIME TO FULLY MEET THEIR POTENTIAL. WE WISH THEM GOOD FORTUNE. ALSO, NO OWNERS DRIVE HUMVEES. THEY DO NOT MEET OUR ENVIRONMENTAL OUTLOOK.

  19. My husband and I attended the Grand Opening event at Pro Maxx earlier today. We are very impressed with the facilities, equipment, and the friendly staff! It sure is nice to be a member of a gym where you are always warmly greeted upon entering and the staff members know your name. They will customize your workout to meet your specfic needs and goals and there are lots of classes to choose from too. They also have a child-minding area that was specifically designed with families in mind. The personal training is outstanding as well! Where else can you train with, and learn from, an Olympic athlete? We drive past several other gyms on the way to Pro Maxx because of the personal service we consistently receive there. If anyone out there is on the fence about joining, we highly recommend that you give Pro Maxx a try! Pro Maxx: Congratulations on your grand opening; best wishes on your continued success!
