Covering Annandale, Bailey's Crossroads, Lincolnia, and Seven Corners in Fairfax County, Virginia

Public invited to free workshop on preserving watersheds

Rain barrels don’t have to be boring.

Learn how you can help protect, preserve, and improve local
watersheds at a free workshop Saturday, Oct. 5, at Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale campus. Educational presentations on the value of the
watershed and how to promote sustainable practices will take place in the Ernst
Center, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

“Limited water resources in rapidly developing suburbs like
Annandale face specific and increasingly urgent problems caused by impervious
surfaces, a dwindling tree canopy, aging and outmoded infrastructure, and policies
that undervalue water,” says environmental activist Elizabeth Kirchner.

Come early for a tour of rain gardens on the NOVA campus at 9:30 a.m. Sessions
will cover the impact of development on watersheds, the role of government,
research and science on watersheds, environmentally friendly landscaping, and
how to engage citizens on these issues.

Throughout the day, Lily Whitesell of the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District will give demonstrations on rain barrels.
Rain barrels ordered in advance from
Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment will be available for pick up.
