Pupusa Fest highlights Salvadoran culture

Grupo Folklorico Flor de Cafe performs dances from El Salvador.

The local Salvadoran community celebrated their culture at a Pupusa Fest June 9 hosted by the General Consulate of El Salvador.

Pupusas

The event, on the grounds of Braddock Elementary School in Annandale, featured free pupusas, a pupusa-eating contest, vendors, giveaways, raffle prizes, songs, and dances from El Salvador, Bolivia, Mexico, and Paraguay.

Danza Los Tecuanes El Tepeyac showcases a dance with a story from Puebla, Mexico.

El Salvador’s Consul General Mauricio Rudy Chavez said the event’s goal is to highlight the country’s culture and traditions. He said residents of El Salvador appreciate the contributions of those who immigrated to the Northern Virginia area.

Eating contest participants were all from different countries.

The crowd voted for their favorite pupusas. The winner was Anojitos Tipicos Paola of Brentwood, N.Y.

The devil makes an appearance.

Billy Sorteo scarfed down six pupusas to win the pupusa-eating contest. Originally from El Salvador and currently living in Sterling, Sorteo declared himself “stuffed” after the contest. He won two round-trip tickets from Volaris airlines.

  1. Dannnnggg…. Wish I’d have known about this. I would have gone full Kobayashi on the pupusa eating contest.

  2. This could evolve as a rival to the famous Nathan’s 4th of July Coney Island hotdog-eating contest. If Joey Chestnut can scarf down 62 dogs in 10 minutes, I wonder what he could do with pupusas. If this grows in popularity, I can see ESPN coming to Annandale.

    1. I would destroy Joey Chestnut in a pupusa eating contest. He’d have to start going by Joey Chestnothing. Publius Secundi pupusam gaudet.

  3. I see a vendor from NY was the crowd favorite. Any local pupusarias that were in the top 10? I googled but didn’t find that info. Can Annandale Today provide this info? Or a list of all the participating pupusa vendors and which state they’re located? Thanks 😊
