Road widening at Gallows Road/Lee Highway intersection to start next June
The traffic around Merrifield is going to get worse before it gets better. Construction is expected to start in Jun 2011 on a federally funded project to widen a portion of Gallows Road and Lee Highway where the two roads intersect. The project should be completed by December 2012, says Arifur Rahman of VDOT.
Lee Highway would be widened to five lanes for six-tenths of a mile, from just west of Merrilee Drive to the beltway. Gallows Road would be widened to six lanes for eight-tenths of a mile, from Gatehouse Road to south of Prosperity Avenue. The wider roads would have a 28-foot median. The photo shows how the intersection will look after the road widening is finished.
Meanwhile, the Mosaic development under construction at that intersection will bring lots of new housing units, offices, stores, restaurants, a movie theater, and a hotel—and lots of new traffic to the Merrifield area.
