Rotarians, students provide Thanksgiving meals to the needy
Thanksgiving, thanks to the generosity of the Bailey’s Crossroads Rotary Club
and the JEB Stuart High School Interact Club.
Club members distributed 111
boxes of food to lower-income residents in the Culmore area Nov. 21. This was
the program’s 37th year.
Volunteers gathered at the Bailey’s Crossroads Safeway early
in the morning, where they formed an assembly line to fill boxes provided by
the store. Each family got a frozen chicken, big cans of green beans and yams,
dinner rolls, juice, and a pie. Names and addresses of lower-income families
were provided by administrators at Bailey’s Crossroads Elementary School.
Before the delivery, Rotary District 7610 Governor Janet Brown
and First Gentleman Felton Page spoke to participants, and Bailey’s Crossroads
Rotary Club President Pat Borowski presented a Service Above Self certificate
to Joseph Pittman, manager of Bailey’s Crossroads Safeway. The store has
supported the Rotary Club’s Thanksgiving meal distribution effort for the past 20
years. Rotarian David Kaye headed this year’s program.
What a wonderful gesture. Thanks to the Safeway. But chickens and not turkeys or Turkey breasts?
