Ruby Tuesday in Bailey’s Crossroads closes

The Ruby Tuesday restaurant at the Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads has closed for good, states a note on the door.

It was open as recently as Dec. 10, according to an unfavorable review on Yelp.

It is not known whether the Ruby Tuesday at the Crossroads Center has closed due to problems with the company or for other reasons.

A report posted on the Restaurant Business website Sept. 5 says the chain has closed more than 120 domestic locations since 2016, about 76 of them in the past 20 months. A decade ago, there were nearly 950 Ruby Tuesday restaurants, and now there are less than 455.

“Founded in 1972, Ruby is one of the oldest brands in casual dining,” Restaurant Business states. “An effort about eight years ago to reposition the concept as a more upscale option proved disastrous, driving away core customers while failing to replace them with newer, younger consumers.”

“It has also felt the same downdrafts afflicting much of casual dining,” the article notes, “including a building binge, increased price sensitivity on the part of customers, and mounting competition from the fast-casual market.”

    1. The website for First Watch shows the new Falls Church location as 5885 Leesburg Pike which is the fairly new strip center called Shoppes at Bailey's Crossroads. First Watch is terrific.

  1. Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday! Who could hang a name on you? When you change with every new day….Still I'm gonna miss you…but, not that much

    1. No one want to do business in the dump. Mass exodus of business and an uptick on homeless and 3rd rate commercial start ups.

    2. Hi 8:01.

I can't speak for privately-owned eateries, but a lot of national casual restaurant chains are closing numerous doors all across the country. They include some of the most well-known names, too, such as Chipotle, Subway, Applebee's, IHOP, and yes, Ruby Tuesday's. Even some Starbucks locations are shutting down! Based on what I've read, some of the reasons go beyond any individual community's failure to thrive, including shifting consumer preferences and an over-abundance of locations–who really, truly needs a Starbucks on every corner, right?

Business-savvy friends have long told me that the restaurant scene is one of the most fickle industries around; I think they're right.

    1. That shopping center soon to be a ghost town: HHGreg, Safeway, Michaels and now Ruby Tuesday. The landlord is clueless on todays shopping habits. Either knock everything down and build a giant Wegmans or begin the process of following the comprehensive plan.

Whatever you don't talk to Penny about it, she will try to stick some government financed tenant in there like social services or a DMV.

    2. Losing Ruby Tuesday's is not such a loss for the area, but this commercial landlord seems reticent to fill the vacancies in the shopping center.

The good shops and restaurants (that can compete with online offerings) generally survive and thrive. Ruby Tuesday's had its day, and it was long in the past.

    3. To Anon at 12:04 Michaels is not Closing…
A.C. Moore store closings: All stores to shutter, Up to 40 of the closing locations will become Michaels. … According to the company, plans for the closings will be shared in the upcoming weeks.

    4. Whatever, it is just another departing business that confirms that Mason is losing more than its gaining in commercial business. And yet the district continues to vote in outdated, autocratic and visionless leadership.

What will it taken Mason voters to wise up?

  2. Loved the salad bar, good deals, and I prefer still going out to eat as opposed to constant delivery. If you wanted something quick and simple and fairly priced that was it. Enjoy your Ubereats as a hermit and overly priced restaurants. Just saying…..

  3. Let’s talk traffic issues at the crossroads. Until the traffic is fixed no business is going do well. Progress in the Mason District is desperately needed.
