Schools get new trees for Arbor Day
Two Annandale elementary schools celebrated Arbor Day by planting trees.
On April 26, the Fairfax County Urban Forest Management Division helped students plant 12 trees at Annandale Terrace Elementary School.
Supervisors Andres Jimenez (Mason) and James Walkinshaw (Braddock), Fairfax County Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid, and school board member Ryan McElveen (at-large) participated in the Arbor Day celebration, which also included students’ music and dance performances.
The Urban Forest division promotes activities to increase the county’s tree canopy through its Tree Preservation and Planting Fund. By the end of May, the fund will have supported 415 new trees at 24 schools since it was launched in 2021.
On April 18, Casey Trees helped students at Braddock Elementary School plant 29 trees funded by the USDA Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program.
Braddock Elementary is planning to put up plaques on the trees identifying the classes that planted them. Students returning to school, even after they graduate, will be able to visit “their” tree.
