“In the latest scam,
victims are receiving calls from someone pretending to be from a utility
company, delivery service, or sweepstakes. Residents are told their service
will be discontinued unless they pay by phone immediately,” a police bulletin
states. Frightened at the thought of no heat, power, or phone, victimized
seniors have provided account numbers and payment information.

Sometimes the caller
says the information is needed to send out important documents such as new
health insurance or Social Security cards. The calls are usually made during
weekdays. Callers have been male and female. Sometimes they have an accent, and
often they know basic information about the victim, such as the name, age, and
address.
