Several Annandale sites offer free meals to eligible children
Children eligible for free and reduced-price school lunches are encouraged to take advantage of the free summer food program at area schools and other locations.
Free breakfasts and or lunches are available to eligible children at 16 Fairfax County public schools, including four in the Annandale area:
- Holmes Middle School—July 25 to Aug. 19; breakfast, 9-9:30 a.m., lunch 11:30-12:30 p.m.
- Parklawn Elementary School—Aug. 1 to 19; breakfast, 8:15-8:45 a.m.
- Poe Middle School—Aug. 1 to 26; lunch, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
- Weyanoke Elementary School—Aug. 1 to 19, lunch 11:40 a.m. to noon
The Parliaments apartment complex in central Annandale is also participating in the USDA summer food program.
The Parliaments is serving lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to children ages 5-18 in the Resident Service Center at 7409 Eastmoreland Road. This program will continue until the week before Labor Day. Children do not need to be residents of the Parliaments to take part.
During the school year, the only nutritious meals some children receive all day are at school. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program was created to make sure children don’t go hungry during the summer months.
