Sidewalk coming to Elmdale Road
A sidewalk will be installed on Elmdale Road, Annandale, between Old Columbia Pike and Braddock Road in Lincolnia. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2013. Funding comes from a Fairfax County bond passed by voters in 2007.
Low impact development now does away with sidewalks, lines the streets with paths, stormwater-sopping gardens – habitat that controls mosquitoes – and trees. More sidewalks mean more impermeable paving means more flooding. What's old it new again.
The installation of this sidewalk will dramatically impact the 7th and 8th holes of the ajoining Pine Crest Golf Course. Will require the removal of numerous trees along Elmdale Road, serious encroachment on the goolf course, and could lead to ultimate demise of the only piblic golf course in our section of the county. I don't beleive the resident of the Mason District have been told the full impact this unnecessary side walk will have on the community and the citizens of Fairfax County who use the Pine Crest Golf Course.
To Anonymous 7/5/12 12:11 PM – On what do you base your impression that this is an "unnecessary sidewalk"?
Sidewalks have become an irritant! Most runners and walkers use the road, even where there are sidewalks. Perhaps a bordered path or mulched path would make more sense so that drainage issues won't be involved. Please reconsider a concrete sidewalk, and choose something more user friendly and nicer to look at.
Thank you, a concerned resident.
My thought is that the sidewalk is on the wrong side of the road. The number of pedestrians on Elmdale clearly warrants a solution but the impact on the golf course will certainly be a big time problem for those who use Pinecrest.
I think the word you were looking for was amenity. Walking with your kids on the side of a road with cars going by (many times with the drivers preoccupied with their phones) is more of an "irritant" than the existence of a sidewalk. I do agree that there are design alternatives to a concrete sidewalk and placement should be carefully considered.
