Signs are up announcing new Lidl store

Lidl signs posted on former Staples store, which had previously been a Whole Foods. [David Siegel]
It’s
official: A Lidl grocery store is going into the former Staples storefront in
Pinecrest Plaza on Little River Turnpike, as we announced in July. Lidl (rhymes with needle) offers low-prices and minimal
services, much like Aldi, another grocery chain based in Germany. Interested in a job? Here’s the link to the Lidl career website.

  1. It is certainly better than a vacant storefront there, but I don't like this explosion of low-cost, low-service grocery stores. I'll check it out, but if it is anything like Aldi, no thanks. Even so, I hope it thrives, since numerous other businesses have been driven out of that shopping center for whatever reason in the last couple of years.

    1. It's a hybrid between Aldi and Trader Joe's. Lidl stores have in house bakeries and a great selection of imported chocolates and candies. Unfortunately, their wine selection isn't nearly as good as TJs. The stores are better staffed and brighter than Aldi, but you do pay for bags at checkout if you don't have them. You bag yourself, but at the register, not a separate area. You don't need a quarter for the shopping cart. Like Trader Joe's, anything you buy is returnable, no questions asked, so the guarantee is good.

    2. I think that Aldi is awesome – it is so affordable and the quality is excellent. You can return anything and they have a double money back guarantee. Products are just as good as Trader Joe's just not as flashy. Putting in a quarter to get a cart is not a big deal to me.

    1. Is anything happening with The Block expansion into the K-Mart space? I thought I read on here that The Block was going to expand into K-Mart by the end of the year but I haven't seen any movement on that whenever I run by the area.

  2. I go to the Lidls in the region (Woodbridge, Manassas, Ashburn) and love 'em. I'm delighted that one will be this close. Yes, there are some similarities between Lidl and Aldi, but Lidl is nicer, bigger and much more interesting assortment of non-food items. A Lidl is being built in Springfield, but this one in the Pinecrest Plaza is much closer — great news!

  3. I'm a big Aldi fan, and I loved the Lidl I visited on my way to Charlottesville several months ago. Having one close by will be great. I only wish they were publicly held so I could invest in them, too!
