Soul food restaurant coming to Pinecrest Plaza

A sign on the future home of Granddaddys Skillet on Little River Turnpike.
[Updated, Oct. 31: The opening is delayed until Nov. 9.]
Granddaddy’s Skillet, a soul food restaurant specializing in pan-fried fish, is coming to Pinecrest Plaza.
The restaurant is slated to have a soft opening on Nov. 2, says Roxanne David, co-owner with her husband Andre.
The couple, residents of Annandale, hosted a soul food booth at the 2019 Taste of Annandale.
Their new restaurant will be in a space formerly occupied by Flippin’ Pizza and currently used by IndAroma for storage.
The new restaurant’s menu will have meatloaf, ham dinners, pork chops, and chicken wings, as well as fish (catfish, whiting, trout, croaker, and Virginia spot). Sides include mac and cheese, cabbage, potato salad, greens, cornbread, and biscuits and gravy.
Granddaddy’s Skillet honors Roxanne’s grandfather who relocated from Alabama to Pittsburgh to work in the steelworks when he was 22 in the early 1900s. When he was laid off, he opened Percy’s Seafood Restaurant in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
After he died, Roxanne’s mother and aunt operated Percy’s, and Roxanne later took over. The family ultimately lost the business and Roxanne moved to Virginia, where she spent 26 years as the cafeteria manager at Poe Middle School
“It was always my dream to open a restaurant and continue my grandfather’s legacy,” she says.
Granddaddy’s Skillet will be open for lunch and dinner 10 a.m.-9 p.m. every day except Sunday.
It could be difficult to launch a restaurant during a pandemic, Roxanne says, “but it’s a perfect time, as well. People want a special feel-good kind of place where you can enjoy a good meal prepared just for you. It will be a feel-good kind of place.”

  1. Wow! Sounds wonderful — I hope you will have carry out — I'm still nervous about eating indoors. I can't wait. Yum.

  2. We’ve been going to Della J’s in Springfield ever since they opened a couple years back. So excited to see a great locally owned soul food restaurant closer to home! Will be there on opening day! Good luck and wishing y’all much success!

  3. Looking forward to it. But the Restaurant will actually be in Alexandria, VA. The zip code is 22312. Not Annandale, 22003.

  4. It sounds AMAZING! Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like a place that would be Celiac friendly so I won't be able to check it out. I wish you the best and may your restaurant become a legend in the area!

  5. I work right around the corner at Reflection Dental on Little River. We wil all come over frequently to support our new food Neighbors.
