Staples at Pinecrest Plaza closing next month

The Staples store at the Pinecrest Plaza shopping center is closing on Oct. 8.

Some items are already marked down, and “everything is going to be on sale,” says store manager Jonathan Wilson. All 10 employees will be transferred to other locations.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Staples Inc. was hit with huge losses after its filed bid to merge with Office Depot and is on track to close 50 stores in North America this year.

The Staples on Gallows Road and Route 50 in Merrifield closed last spring.

    1. Me too! I still remember the note on the door saying they'd moved "just down the street," when really, they'd gone much further. I'm in Springfield now and then, so I'll sometimes stop in there, but I have to rush home with my purchases to be sure the food stays safe.

"Just down the road" my eye. Neither one of them is.

  1. In West Virginia, when the coal companies want to drive the people out of the area so they can strip-mine in peace and quiet, the first thing they do is close the local stores. Then they build coal processing plants adjacent to schools.

  2. I'm not surprised that Staples is going out of business. Once I needed to print something from their Copy/Print services and they failed to follow through. I ordered my prints on Friday and wanted to pick it up on Sunday. Guess what, no print outs on Sunday because apparently the system "failed." After that, I never step foot into a Staples again.

  3. Thank the Gross one they voted for, who also lives far from any of the disaster she has created. She's like 200 feet from Aexandria City and probably shops at the "Fresh Fields" there; certainly not at our Giant,Safeway, or 'Asian Markets'….

    1. Really??? You want to blame Penny Gross for Staples having to close 50 stores across North America, including one in Mason District?

What's next, blaming Penny Gross because Sears and Kmart are losing tons of money and will need to close more stores, including one in Mason District?

I'm no Democrat, but your comment is ridiculous even for a tin-foil hat wearing, black helicopter fearing, conspiracy theorist.

What other lame comment do you have in store? That Hillary has Parkinson's disease? That's been debunked also!

    2. Change that one can see all around in the recent past is that Mason District has become more of a lower income immigrant ghetto than it was 20 years ago. Other districts have not suffered nearly this much rapid decline, but rather adjacent districts have been thriving while Mason continues to loose businesses and its middle class.

    3. Lower-income folks shop and eat.

We aren't a complete desolate wasteland of retail. There are going to be so many businesses over the next few decades that go by the wayside due to the internet and other sea changes in retail.

    4. Fastest growing demographic in Mason is old people 1017pm, not "low income immigrant ghetto" types. Also worth noting that CAGR for avg household income exceeds most of the other districts. Granted, that's because the avg income in Mason is lower than other districts – but it indicates that Mason is growing. Why not stop complaining for once?

    5. Adam get ur head out of the sand. This place has been on a spiraling decline. Middle and upper classes moving out for better schools, lower income immigrants living in boarding houses, singles fleeing for metro accessible communities, businesses packing up, many vacant store fronts, and yes an elderly population; the only ones keeping up their yards and sweeping the curbs. The immigrants won't even pick up their trash and litter in their front yards. One can tell by all the empty water bottles. We are like a third world community: pockets of wealthy neighborhoods surrounded by more older neighborhoods in economic and physical decline sucking in more renters that just don't give a damn. And the County doesn't have a clue.

    6. Your statements do not generally align with the truth as presented in fairfax year end demographic reports, sorry. If it sucks so bad, move and enjoy the massive appreciation your home has built in our "run down" community.

    7. Is Adam visually impaired or just another Penny minion. ? I resent the helicopters in our suburban skies, and the "ghost cruisers". I want real police not instruments of terror flying around at all hours of the night, and empty police cruisers parked hideously around the Mason District. It's embarrassing.

  4. I am very sorry to see this occur. I just called Staples – since I use that store for work all the time. They told me that the pizza place is going out and other businesses as well – because the owner of the center is building something? I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. I know the gas station will turn into a bank. Does anyone who follows land use know about this?

    1. I have been a loyal customer of Hunan Kitchen and Firehouse Subs for a long time. If they close hopefully they relocate close by.
