Steven Lockard to serve as FCPS interim superintendent

The Fairfax County School Board has selected Steven Lockard, deputy superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, to serve as interim superintendent.
Superintendent Karen Garza announced her resignation on Sept. 19. Lockard will assume the duties of superintendent when Garza leaves on Dec. 16.
Garza, who has led FCPS since June 2013, has accepted a position as president and CEO of Battelle for Kids, a nonprofit education organization based in Columbus, Ohio.
Lockard joined FCPS in August 2014 after serving as deputy superintendent of the Frederick, Md., school system.
In his role as deputy superintendent, Lockard oversees the chief academic officers, the five region offices, the school support executive director, hearings office, and the student activities and athletic programs.
Since joining FCPS, Lockard has worked to align best practices with “Ignite,” the FCPS strategic plan, states an announcement issued by FCPS Oct. 6.
“Under his leadership, the district continues to see school improvement under the Project Momentum initiative, a turnaround model for schools experiencing persistent achievement gap and accreditation issues,” FCPS states. “Lockard also helped the district transition through a reorganization of the region offices and instructional services, enhancing their support to students and schools.”
“Steve Lockard is a skilled, collaborative administrator who understands how our school district works,” said School Board Chair Sandy Evans (Mason). “He is a champion for students and ensures that student achievement is at the forefront of everything we do. The board is grateful that he has agreed to lead Fairfax County Public Schools while we search for a new superintendent.”

“He is a champion for students and ensures that student achievement is at the forefront of everything we do." Maybe he will focus on that student achievement and crush the wasteful Stuart name change train that will cost this county millions and not help the education of one student.
I've wanted to change Stuart's name since I was a student there decades ago, but this thing has become ENTIRELY ABSURD! As others have said, the votes are in and the decision was "no." Move on (at least for now).
I don't know exactly what the process of establishing the "focus group" will entail, but Superintendent Garza has decided to put it on hold so that: 1. the county can concentrate its attention on choosing her successor and 2. the acting superintendent can take the next steps in forming the committee himself.
I say, make yourself heard! This may be a golden opportunity.
