Stream restoration underway in Lincolnia
The restoration of a section of Turkeycock Run in Lincolnia is expected to be completed in May.
The project consists of stabilizing the stream banks using natural channel design beginning at the culvert under Little River Turnpike and extending approximately 300 feet downstream, says Sharon North of the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.
Turkeycock Run is part of the Cameron Run watershed.
“We are incorporating several elements of natural channel design to stabilize the stream,” North says. That includes a stone step pool at the end of the culvert, a stone cross vane, several rock sills, and stone stream bank protection.
These structures will direct the water and dissipate its energy, reducing erosive forces and migration of the stream both horizontally and vertically.
A retaining wall will be constructed directly adjacent to 6391 Little River Turnpike, where the stream bank was severely eroded. Erosion caused a portion of the parking lot to collapse into the stream.
The project includes grading excavation, stream realignment, reinforcement of the stream bed, and restoring disturbed areas with native vegetation.
