Supervisors support consolidation for storage facility expansion

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on July 27 agreed to
allow Public Storage at 4312 Ravensworth Road, in Annandale, to replace its
existing building with a new, larger storage facility to include first-floor
retail uses – but only if the property can be consolidated with the gas station
next door.
That’s what the Planning Commission recommended in June.
Public Storage had sought an amendment to the Annandale section
of the county’s Comprehensive Plan to allow projects to go forward without
consolidating properties if developers act in good faith to pursue consolidation.

The company’s attorney, Mark Viani, told the supervisors the
owner of the 3 United gas station rejected his offer to buy the property, but
he would consolidate later if the opportunity arises.
The Comprehensive Plan for central Annandale encourages the
consolidation of properties and pedestrian-friendly mixed residential and
commercial uses and discourages storage facilities.

I didn't realize the storage facility was as vast as it really is…I wouldn't mind the expansion if it means the space becomes a mixed use facility (I don't use the storage space). I fill up with gas at the station next door but even if it were a personal loss, having one fewer gas station in Annandale is not a bad development…there are too many gas stations as it is…Annandale needs to have better development in the CBD.
