Survey underway on vacuum leaf collections

Fairfax County residents are invited to take a survey on vacuum leaf collections.
Access the survey here. It’s open through April 20.
The survey asks residents to assess the quality of the leaf collection program, how they learn about the leaf collection schedule, and whether they have recommendations for improvement.
In addition to the survey, residents can submit feedback via email to [email protected] or call 703-890-5898 and enter code 11311.
To complete the survey on a mobile device, text “2024 leaf” to 73224.

Throughout the fall, Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez reported receiving numerous complaints from residents about missed and late collections.
The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution introduced by Jimenez calling for the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) to develop a communication and implementation plan for the 2025-26 leaf collection program and hold a meeting for residents at the Mason Government Center.
Meanwhile, DPWES announced in December that it’s working on overhauling the way trash and recycling materials are handled.
The agency is proposing a Unified Sanitary District model. The county would outsource collections to private companies, which would have exclusive rights to serve a specific geographic area.

Wish this would just go away. Do people realize you’re directly paying sometimes hundreds of dollars (depending on property value) for a service that’s barely utilized? Most of the piles I see can be mulched or bagged and picked up with regular service
I’m with you 100%, and I live in a Ffx Co leaf collection area. It is an absolute mess. Landscape contractors blow leaves to the curb and into the streets regardless of scheduled pickup timeframes, then when the county changes its pickup schedule, the leaves get pulverized into the pavement, the streets become virtually unnavigable, and the storm drains fill up with leaf debris. And for this service, I get to pay 40+% more than I did a couple years ago. I’ve had enough. I’ve managed to find a way to compost leaves in my garden beds, and I believe others can as well. And if they can’t – contract with their landscape contractors to have their leaves hauled away. Let the county focus on trash, recycling, and yard waste removal.
