Fairfax County Police are investigating the suspicious death of a young woman in a home on the 6900 block of Westmoreland Road in the Westlawn neighborhood in the Falls Church area of Mason District.
An update was issued by the police June 18:
The deceased woman is Glenda Aviles, 28. She died of stab wounds. Police
have obtained an arrest warrant for murder against her boyfriend, Juan
Ramon Matetu Figueroa, 35.
Police had responded to check on the welfare of a person in that home at around 9:30 a.m. on June 18, according to a report on the Fairfax County Police Blotter. No one answered the door and there was nothing that appeared out of the ordinary at that time. Later in the day, officers returned to the home with a homeowner, and entered the residence. They found a woman, believed to be in her mid-20s, deceased.
There were multiple people living in the home, and the victim rented one of the rooms. Detectives believe she died of trauma, but an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
Detectives are asking for the public’s assistance with helping locate a vehicle that may be related to this crime: a missing 2004 gold Mercedes, four-door sedan with Virginia tag WVF-8414. Anyone with information on this vehicle or the incident, is asked to contact the police department, 703-691-2131, or Crime Solvers, by calling 866-411-TIPS/8477 or texting “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637.
One assault yesterday, one murder today, both in illegal rentals, overcrowded homes in Mason District. Thank you again Penny Gross for your total lack of oversight and care in Mason District. You just keep cutting those ribbons and being useless.
I agree. Penny Gross needs to be put out to pasture.
Four paragraphs to a Death in Westlawn and 14 paragraphs to a sewage spill in Lake Barcroft. I get it, do you?
The number of paragraphs doesn't have anything to do with the seriousness of the story.
It would if that was your dead Mother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Daughter. The life of a loved one should get more press than the polluted lake of the rich.
Grow up! What do you want her to do go knock on the door where someone was just killed! Then it will be a big story because she has been wonderful contriubuter to our community. Thank you Ellie for all your work you do. The community appreciate you!
There's a lot more information on the sewage spill. There's no information yet on this death – the police statement is just about as long as this article.
Give me a break. The sewage spill has been an on-going issue since May (maybe even April?) and this is the first time it has been covered. There is a lot of info on it, so it's easier to write a long story. It also affects more than Lake Barcroft residents.
This woman just died *last* night!
What is it exactly that you'd like to know?
I think the amount of coverage on the murder is just fine. Anybody's murder is tragic of course, but in the end, it affects far fewer people than the contamination of Lake Barcroft.
Thanks for writing this blog! I appreciate the work you do.
The article can ONLY be as long as the police statement. This is an ongoing investigation by the police, with limited information available, and a suspect still at large! If you are looking for juicy tidbits to satiate your boredom, go watch the ID channel or something.
Ellie has been doing a WONDERFUL job day in and day out, rain or shine, sharing news about our community. Have some gratitude and respect for her work!
There has been a pattern of malicious comments on this blog for quite some time now. This seems to be the work of one individual, in most cases. Please take your hate and leave this blog. None of us will miss you, troll!
Well, let's build the high-density apartments in Seven Corners to reduce the overcrowding. I don't know how anyone can complain about the high-density plan in one sentence then turn-around and say that someone should do something about illegal renters. Wake up! The people are already here living in high-density just doing it illegally by renting rooms. How can you not see that building more residential living space at an AFFORDABLE price, will help reduce the overcrowding issue in single family homes?!
The Fairfax County Police Department issued an update on Jan. 14, 2016. They now believe the suspect, Juan Matetu Figueroa, has fled the United States and might be in Honduras. He was last seen in North Carolina in July 2014.
