Blanket drive assists Syrian refugees in Turkey

Local governments and other organizations in Northern Virginia are again sponsoring a blanket drive to assist Syrian refugees seeking shelter in Turkey.

More than a million Syrians have fled to Turkey to escape civil war and attacks by ISIS. The first blanket drive was held last year after several local government leaders visited refugee camps in Turkey.

This year’s blanket drive is Nov. 1-22. There are many drop-off points throughout the region, including the Mason District Government Center in Annandale, open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays.

Paxton Van Lines will be collecting the blankets free of charge and delivering them to Maersk Shipping Co. for transport to Turkey at no cost. The American Turkish Friendship Association (ATFA), Northern Virginia Regional Commission, and Pinnacle Academy are also a part of this initiative.

The effort is chaired by Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chair Sharon Bulova, Loudoun County Board chair Scott York, Arlington Board chair Jay Fisette, Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, and Prince William County chair Corey Stewart. 

Donations can also be made online. In addition, revenue from the ATFA’s Annual Dialogue and Friendship Dinner Nov. 30 will support Syrian refugees in Turkey.
