There are plenty of places to see fireworks in NOVA on July 4

UPDATE: Click here for information about fireworks on July 4, 2012.
Unless you or your neighborhoods are doing your own show, you’ll have to
get out of Annandale if you want to see some good fireworks on the
Fourth of July.

The biggest official gatherings closest to Annandale, as usual, will be in Fairfax and Falls Church.

There will be an evening show and fireworks at Fairfax High School, 3501 Rebel Run, 7-10 p.m. Lawn chairs, smoking, animals (except guide dogs), and items that could puncture the synthetic turf are not permitted on the football field.

Here’s the schedule:
 7 p.m. – City of Fairfax Band.
8 p.m. – Welcome remarks and presentation of awards by the mayor.
8:20 p.m. – Leggz (Motown and classic rock from the 1970s and 80s).
9:10 p.m. – City of Fairfax Band plays the 1812 Overture.
9:20 p.m. – Fireworks.
9:50 – 10:30 p.m. Leggz Finale (Neil Diamond and Elvis Tribute Show)
Rain date: July 5 (fireworks only).

The Falls Church music and fireworks show takes place at George Mason High School, 7124 Leesburg Pike, beginning at 7 p.m. with live music by Bad Hair Day. The fireworks will start at 9:20 p.m.

Seating will be available at the football stadium. Spectators are advised to bring blankets for sitting on the field. Chairs will only be allowed on paved surfaces. Alcohol, smoking, and pets are prohibited, and you can’t bring your own fireworks.
Rain date: July 5.

Other Northern Virginia fireworks displays will take place at:
  • Southside Park, Ross Drive, Vienna – 9:15 p.m.
  • Langley High School, 6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean – live music, food, games, and activities for kids begin at 6 p.m., fireworks at dark.
  • Herndon Community Center/Bready Park, 814 Ferndale Ave., Herndon – Kids rides begin at 5 p.m.; music, crafts, bingo, and other games start at 6:30 p.m., fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
  • Lake Fairfax Park, 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive, Reston – 9:15 p.m.
Another option: Find a hill with a clear view of the Washington Monument and watch the fireworks on the National Mall without the traffic jams or Metro crowds.

If July 4 isn’t enough, there will be a fireworks show on July 9, 9:30 p.m. in Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison St., Alexandria, following a concert by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra at 9 p.m.

And if you’re planning a do-it-yourself fireworks show, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has some safety tips online. Be careful to avoid prohibited fireworks, like cherry bombs, firecrackers, and skyrockets. Just the possession of illegal fireworks is a class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
