Three candidates running for Braddock supervisor

There are now three candidates running for the Braddock position on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

Since we reported in December that James Walkinshaw, a former aide to Rep. Gerry Connelly, is hoping to succeed John Cook, two more candidates have jumped in: Irma Corado and Jason Remer.

Corado and Walkinshaw will face off in the Democratic primary on June 11. Remer, a Republican who has been endorsed by Cook, is expected to be on the general election ballot in November. Cook, one of two Republicans on the BoS, is retiring from the board.

Remer is a professional engineer, a past president of the Woodbury Woods Community Association, founder and adult representative of a Boy Scout troop, and as a member of the Truro Anglican Church, works on outreach to immigrant families.

Among the issues highlighted on his website: reduce property taxes, improve career and technical education, and support Diversion First and mental health programs.

Corado, a digital data associate for the Indivisible Project and community activist focusing on Latinx issues, immigrated as a child from Guatemala.

After graduating from the University of Virginia, she moved to Guatemala to work for a nonprofit that promotes entrepreneurship as a way to empower lower-income women.

Corado’s priorities include making government more accessible, transparent, and accountable; ending voluntary cooperation with ICE; language justice for the county’s diverse immigrant communities; affordable housing; investments in the public schools; and greater reliance on renewable energy.

Walkinshaw

In addition to working for Connolly for 12 years, Walkinshaw has been a mentor to at-risk boys; serves on Fairfax County’s Domestic Violence Prevention, Policy, and Coordinating Council; serves on the board of the Ravensworth Farm Civic Association; and is a volunteer with Friends of Lake Accotink Park.

His main issues include carbon neutrality to combat climate change, expanded transportation options, investments in teacher pay and school improvements, economic development, and investing in older areas like Annandale,

Walkinshaw has been endorsed by Connolly, Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova; school board member Megan McLaughlin (Braddock); Supervisor James McKay (Lee), who’s running for board chair; at-large school board member Ilryong Moon; Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid; and Fairfax County Professional Firefighters & Paramedics – IAFF Local 2068.
