Tips for getting through another snowstorm
The snowstorm seems to be winding down, after dumping about five to seven inches on Annandale.
It’s better to avoid going out but if you must, call 511 or visit the traffic information section on the VDOT website to check road conditions and review the snow driving tips on the Fairfax County Emergency Information blog.
You can track snowplowing progress on the VDOT website. Report road problems to VDOT 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or [email protected].
To make it easier for snowplows to get through, park in the driveway or along the odd-numbered side of the street. You might as well skip shoveling the end of your driveway, as the snowplow will push the snow back.
Avoid overexertion while shoveling snow—no matter your age or physical condition. Shoveling heavy snow can trigger a heart attack or exacerbate other medical conditions.
If you do feel fit enough for shoveling, be sure to clear a three-foot radius around fire hydrants and clear off sidewalks so the kids can walk safely when schools reopen.
If you need help for an elderly or disabled person, call 211 or visit the 211 database and search for appropriate services.
Stay away from downed power lines; assume they are energized and dangerous. Report power outages online at Dominion Power or call 866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357).
During the snowstorm, the Fairfax County Police Department will only respond to accident reports that involve injuries, hit and runs, one or more vehicles not drivable, and accidents that involve arguments between drivers.
