That store
just opened in March 2013, along with a wave of car title lenders that have flooded Northern Virginia within the last couple of years. Those companies provide quick, high-interest loans to people who can’t get credit cards or bank loans.

Jerry’s, a
longtime Annandale institution, closed April 10. It took just two days to sell
the pizza-making machines and other restaurant equipment at auction.

When the restaurant’s
lease ended March 31, the rent was going up, said co-manager Milly Torres. The owner, Gemini Properties, accepted TitleMax’s offer to pay $3,000 more per month.

Jerry’s has
been at that spot for more than 30 years, said Torres, who has been there for
15 years. She will manage another Jerry’s in Ashburn.

jeeze another one: Annandale has become the states Title Max headquarters
Thanks Saslaw. Hope you weren't a big fan of the Jerry's in your own district:

Thanks for the good article link. I love how Saslaw was the recipient of the most contributions from the loan sharks. When I asked Saslaw about his legislation he thought it was really good at reining them in. It's sad. It's just great how the legislation was approved with a bipartisan vote, only McDonnell tried to rein the loan sharks in. No matter republican or democrat sleezy is sleezy.
Hmmmmm, let me guess who would need "companies (that) provide quick, high-interest loans to people who can’t get credit cards or bank loans."
College graduates? Young professionals? Folks with good credit and savings accounts?
Penny Gross is true to her name 'cause that's all she brings in on every dollar Mason District spends.
huh? Why must every discussion of everything be turned into a complaint about working class brown people? Get real. Annandale has lots of older housing that young professionals are not interested in, and it lacks the transit and density that the young college grads want. That won't change because you elect someone who yells about hispanics. The only change is if we embrace being inside the beltway, and push for more transit, walking and biking.
You are right, until FFX grows up and pust in the infrastructure that people want to make Annandale a desirable place to live we will continue to get the left overs from Arlington, Merrifield's Mosaic District, Tysons and everywhere else the County is paying attention except for Annandale. The fact is we have more Title Insurance Co's than anyone else on the planet….we don't need anymore. We need development that will spur a community that is not full of loan sharks!
And N Arlington has lots of "older housing that young professionals are not interested in" yet they are paying 800-900 thousand dollars to tear them down and build $1.8-3.8 million dollar houses in their place. Unlike in Mason where tenants are attracting two or three times as many people to move into the houses they are renting without benefit of landlord approval, and in many cases with landlord approval thus creating more "Penny Palaces of ill repute" Nothing to do with skin color, everything to do with defiance of codes and ordinances as written resulting in diminished values of properties where the "Penny Palaces" exist.
The fact TitleMax offered $3k more than Jerry's is a clue to what a rip-off these quickie loan places are.
Loan-sharks is more like it.
Every other community in FFCO Is opening a bank on every corner. Jim Moran's district is opening car loans and drug stores (to cash in on O'care's drug 'entitlements'.) Guess he hasn't noticed illegal immigrants aren't interested in birth CONTROL.
Actually the TD bank is pretty new. And everyone uses drug stores. And I'm not sure what you mean by drug entitlements – you really want people to not get meds cause they are uninsured? Wow. Also, you might notice that real estate is at a premium in muhc of fht 8th congressional district, which of course includes Arlington and Alexandria.
Annandale needs a pawn shop and tattoo parlor, we have enough title loan places.
Amen to that.
We need our leadership to stand up. When will they think about us the ones who pay taxes and would like to have our homes be worth something in the future.
Hopefully Gross will have plenty of time to think about us, once we get her elected OUT OF OFFICE.
Some years ago Penny pledged to reduce the number of automotive use businesses in Annandale. Don't you see, this is her plan unfolding: get all the titles, ship the cars overseas, no cars, no one left with a penny to their names, no automotive businesses. That's pure genius. Penny, you're the best.
No small part of the blame applies to Jerry's Pizza. They have been there for years, before Paisanos, before Little Ceasers and could have built themselves as a go to place. But they sucked at the major metric you need to run successful retail/restaurant. Quality, Price and Service. For example, it's not that Paisano's has better quality food, they are just as mediocre but they have better deals and good customer service. Same reasons they closed at Bailey's Crossroads and Carlyle area in Alexandria.
