Townhouses proposed for Annandale

Two boarded-up houses on McWhorter Street on land proposed for development.

Christopher Land LLC is proposing to build 41 townhouses on a 3.8-acre site on McWhorter Place in Annandale.

The site consists of nine separate properties on both sides of McWhorter near Markham Street that Christopher Land would need to purchase and consolidate. Some of the parcels are vacant land and some have small buildings.

Part of the site is currently zoned C-3 (office district) and part is zoned R-4 (four residential units per acre). The developer is seeking to have the property rezoned as PDH-12 (planned development housing with 12 units per acre).

The Fairfax County Zoning Evaluation Division accepted the application for review on Oct. 11 and hasn’t yet issued a report or scheduled a hearing.

Christopher Land tried, unsuccessfully, to gain approval of a 72-unit project on Gallows Road for seniors. The Planning Commission agreed last February to defer indefinitely a decision on that project.

  1. Wow, those houses are STILL there? I used to walk (or ride my bike) past those 30 years ago on my way to the bowling alley, Safeway, Arthur Treachers, and the old Penguin Feathers. There was also an abandoned house near the Hope Lutheran Church….close to that townhouse community. Looks like it is now called Haven of Northern Virginia. Man, that brings back some good memories!
