Two killed in Falls Church fire

A fire at a house in the Westlawn neighborhood in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County claimed two lives, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports.
When firefighters arrived on the scene at 3:25 a.m., Jan. 23, they found flames had totally engulfed the single-story, ranch-style home at 3103 Manor Road.
It took them approximately 30 minutes to control the fire. When they were able to enter the house they discovered two dead bodies. The names of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. A news report in the Washington Post quotes a neighbor who said the house was occupied by a deaf woman and her daughter.
A Fairfax County news release says a dog and cat also perished in the fire. According to WTOP, the fire claimed two dogs and at least five cats. The home is a complete loss. The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department announced May 16 that the fire was accidental and was caused by a malfunctioning wall-mounted natural gas heater in the living room. There were smoke alarms in the home, but the victims were deaf and fire investigators were unable to determine if the devices were visual smoke alarms due to the extensive fire damage. According to the medical examiner, the cause of death was smoke inhalation.
