Tyson named FCPS Cluster 3 assistant superintendent

Douglas Tyson, principal of Kilmer Middle School, has been named Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) assistant superintendent for Cluster 3, effective Aug. 1. He replaces Dan Parris, who has been named interim deputy superintendent by Superintendent Karen Garza.

Cluster 3 includes the Annandale, Stuart, and Woodson pyramids and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). One of the biggest issues Tyson will deal with is the selection of a location for a new elementary school in the eastern part of the county. Funding for a new school, $20.9 million, is included in the school bond issue on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Tyson joined FCPS in 2004 as assistant principal at TJHSST, moved on to South Lakes High School as subschool principal, and to Kilmer in 2009. He is a member of the FCPS Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee.

Parris had planned to retire next year, but agreed to serve as interim deputy superintendent beginning Jan. 1, 2014, until a permanent replacement is hired for Richard Moniuszko, who will retire from FCPS at the end of December. Moniuszko has accepted a position in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University.

Parris’ background at FCPS includes teaching at several schools, assistant principal at Holmes and Stone middle schools, and principal of Rocky Run Middle School, before he was named Cluster 3 assistant superintendent in 2010.
