Uptick in catalytic converter thefts
The Mason Police District has seen a recent uptick in the theft of car parts, including catalytic converters, airbags, rims, and tires.
These thefts have been mostly around Beauregard Street in Lincolnia and Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads. Thieves are targeting Toyota Priuses for catalytic converters and Honda Accords and Civics for tires, rims, and airbags.
The FCPD logged more than 360 catalytic converter thefts in Fairfax County in 2021.
To prevent these thefts, the police department recommends taking these actions:
- Park in a garage or secured area if possible. If that’s not an option, park in a well-lit area.
- Install a motion-activated dashcam system.
- Install a commercial catalytic converter theft prevention device.
- Always lock your car doors.
- Don’t leave valuables in a vehicle, including firearms, or at least keep them hidden from plain view.
- Paint or etch your vehicle identification number on the catalytic converter.
- Report suspicious activity, such as someone trying multiple doors, taking a long time to get into a vehicle, or trying to pry open a door.
- If you see anything suspicious, call the police non-emergency number, 703-691-2131, or call 911 if it’s an emergency.
