Use a lawn company committed to protecting the watershed
If you’re thinking of hiring a lawn care company, it’s advisable to pick one that uses methods that won’t harm the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) developed a list of watershed-friendly lawn care operators that have agreed to train their employees to use lawn care products responsibly, follow appropriate lawn fertilization practices, and provide environmentally sound advice to customers.
The following companies around the Annandale area have voluntarily entered into an agreement with DCR to follow a nutrient-management plan approved by DCR, which covers the amount, placement, timing, and application of nutrient-containing materials, such as fertilizer:
- Agro Lawn Systems, Vienna, (703) 938-8844
- Andy’s Lawn Service, Arlington, (703) 241-3752
- Blade Runners Inc., Fairfax, (703) 273-8873
- Fox Run Nurseries, Alexandria, (703) 360-0199
- LawnMate, Springfield, (703) 256-9595
- SavaTree, Springfield, (703) 369-2500
- Wheat’s Lawn & Custom Landscape, Vienna, (703) 641-4790
Even though these companies are on DCR’s list, you still might want to talk to them about their commitment to protecting the watershed it you hire them.
