VDOT installs new crosswalks and signals on Columbia Pike
New accessible traffic signals and crosswalks, aimed at improving safety, have been implemented at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Lacy Boulevard/Maple Court in Bailey’s Crossroads, VDOT reports.
The traffic signal upgrades include new mast arm poles, foundations, wiring, electrical equipment, high-visibility signal backplates, and signs.
Also, drivers on Columbia Pike now have flashing yellow arrows for left turns from Columbia Pike to Lacy Boulevard and Maple Court. Those arrows allow drivers to turn left if there is no oncoming traffic.

The project includes four new high-visibility crosswalks with accessible pedestrian signals at the intersection. Those signals provide audible tones, verbal messages, and/or vibrotactile surfaces to help pedestrians with blindness or other visual disabilities cross safely. The devices are designed to automatically adjust to ambient noise to limit the noise impact to nearby residents.
Other pedestrian improvements include curb ramp upgrades that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The $579,000 project is financed with federal funding. In this area, Columbia Pike averages about 35,000 vehicles a day, Lacy Boulevard averages 5,300, and Maple Court averages 1,300, VDOT states.
