VDOT reduces speed limits on Columbia Pike

Lower speed limits on Columbia Pike will take effect at the end of July.

The Virginia Department of Transportation approved reducing the speed limit from 45 miles per hour to 35 mph on the portion of Columbia Pike between Sleepy Hollow Road and the Rose Lane/Moss Drive intersection. The speed limit is also reduced from 40 to 35 mph between Sleepy Hollow and Powell Lane (near Lake Barcroft).

Existing speed limits on the rest of Columbia Pike in Fairfax County are 25 mph in the Annandale Central Business District and 35 mph from Powell Lane to the Arlington County line.

Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross had asked VDOT to conduct an engineering study to determine the need for speed limit reductions on Columbia Pike. The Fairfax County Police report there were 82 accidents between Gallows Road and Sleepy Hollow Road between 2006 and 2009, including one pedestrian fatality in 2006.

  1. They have already lowered the speed limits on Columbia Pike without much notice. Can you let me know where you got the "end of July" change date? Thanks.

  2. Be careful! Limit is 25 mph on Columbia Pike between Gallows and Little River with speed traps and cops constantly giving tickets!

    1. Yep!! I just got a ticket this morning. Unmarked police car. I didn't know that the speed limit changed mid-road on Columbia Pike. UGH!!
