VDOT to redo King Arthur Road Bridge
The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing to rehabilitate the bridge on King Arthur Road over Accotink Creek and the Cross County Trail. The bridge is in the Camelot neighborhood in Annandale.
VDOT will replace the entire bridge deck slab, all supporting steel beams and bearings, pier caps, and the tops of columns. The existing sidewalk will be widened from 5 feet to 6.5 feet by widening the bridge. The exposed concrete pier columns and abutments will be repaired.
Construction isn’t expected to start until early 2027. The total cost is estimated at $9.4 million. Funding for construction and utility relocation will come from the federal and state governments. The preliminary engineering phase ($900,00) is financed with state funding.
The road will be open to traffic and pedestrians during construction. There will be a single, reversable signalized traffic lane for vehicles.
Access ramps to the Cross County Trail adjacent to the bridge will remain open for pedestrians.
The bridge was built in 1964 and has a 194-foot deck overlay that was constructed in 1994. The bridge averages 1,800 vehicles a day.
Residents can submit comments on the project through Sept. 5 via email to [email protected]. Put “King Arthur Road over Accotink Creek Bridge Rehabilitation” in the subject line.
