Virginia Music Adventures supports young jazz musicians

Some of the most talented youths in the area performed at Virginia Music Adventures’ 6th Annual Benefit Gala Saturday evening at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale.
The students were in the Chapel Square Combo, a jazz ensemble made up of local high school students, and the Annandale Jazz Ambassadors, a larger group made up of students age 12-18. The groups are run by Virginia Music Adventures, which also provides music lessons and takes the students on goodwill tours across the United States and abroad.
The event at NOVA, featuring a silent auction and a Russian-themed dinner, helped raise money for the students’ trips. The Annandale Jazz Ambassadors are heading to Russia April 13-23, where they will perform with Russian musicians and take part in workshops and cultural exchange activities in Moscow, Krasnodar, and St. Petersburg.
The Chapel Square Combo spent a long weekend in Paris last month. Singer Jenny George (in photo at left), a junior at the Commonwealth Academy in Alexandria, says the highlight of the trip was performing at the Duc des Lombard jazz club on the Left Bank.
