Virginia re-elects Sen. Kaine
In a presidential election that will put Donald Trump, a convicted felon, back in the White House, reflecting a major rightward turn in the U.S., Virginia voters supported Vice President Harris and re-elected Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine.
Voters in Northern Virginia re-elected Democrats Rep. Don Beyer and Rep. Gerry Connolly, the Virginia Department of Elections reports.
The vote for president in Virginia was closer than expected, with Harris getting just 51.6 percent of the vote. In Fairfax County, more than 65 percent of voters supported Harris.
Kaine was re-elected with 54.1 percent of the vote, while Republican challenger Hung Cao got 45.8 percent. Kaine did better in Fairfax County, with 67.5 percent. Kaine will now be in the minority, as the Republicans retook control of the Senate.
Beyer got 71.7 percent of the vote in the 8th District (Fairfax County), easily beating the Republican challenger, Jerry Torres.
In the 11th District, which includes a large section of Fairfax County, Connolly got 66.5 percent of the vote, beating Mike Van Meter.
In a closely watched race in the 7th District (Fredericksburg) vacated by Democrat Abigail Spanberger, Eugene Vindman (D) beat Derrick Anderson (R), with 50.9 percent.
Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat, won the open seat in the 10th District (Loudoun County) with 51.9 percent, beating Mike Clancy.
In Fairfax County, voters approved a transportation bond (66.2 percent) and a public safety bond (69.6 percent).
Virginia voters approved a constitutional amendment to provide a tax exemption to surviving spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty. Just over 93 percent voted in favor of the amendment.
