Virginia tax holiday starts Friday

If you’re planning to buy a major appliance or upgrade your wardrobe, you might want to wait until Virginia’s sales tax holiday kicks in on Aug. 2.

The tax holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4.

During the tax holiday, certain hurricane and emergency preparedness supplies, Energy Star and WaterSense products, school supplies, and clothing are tax-free.

Examples of eligible items:

  • Portable generators – $1,000 or less per item.
  • Gas-powered chainsaws – $350 or less per item.
  • Clothing and shoes – $100 or less per item.
  • Washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioners, and other EnergyStar products – up to $2,500 per item.
  • Showerheads, toilets, and other WaterSense products – up to $2,500 per item.
