The $55 million public safety bond on the Nov. 6 ballot
includes $9 million for a new Bailey’s Crossroads Fire Station at the same
location, Firehouse Lane just off Columbia Pike. Plans for the new station were approved a year ago. Meanwhile, construction has
started on a temporary structure nearby on Moncure Avenue. The existing building is scheduled to be demolished in February.

Volunteer firefighter and EMT Dillon Dickson is “fairly confident” the bond will pass. If it
doesn’t, “we’ll be in the temporary structure for a long time.”
The Bailey’s Crossroads Fire Station is the busiest in Fairfax County. The county owns the building and the fire truck, and the volunteers
own and maintain all the other vehicles. Ninety-percent of the fire station’s funds come from the community,
says Dickson, who has been with the station for 16 years. The public can make
donations online.

The station has about 45 volunteers. They supplement
the full-time career staff who are county employees. Volunteers are required to work at least 20 hours a month, although some do much more.
