Volunteer projects honor King’s legacy
In honor of Martin Luther King, Fairfax County invites residents to carry out volunteer activities to benefit the community.
County offices and schools are closed for MLK Day on Monday, Jan. 20.
There will be a trash and litter cleanup event on Monday hosted by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation. To participate, register in advance, collect trash from any sidewalk or trail in the county, and send a photo of your trash to [email protected].
People who collect the most trash can win a prize, such as an annual bike share membership, movie tickets, restaurant coupons, gift cards from bike shops, and more.
Next Saturday, Jan. 25, there will be a family-friendly day of service hosted by Volunteer Fairfax at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Road in Falls Church.
Families with children will have an opportunity to complete service projects involving environmental stewardship, food insecurity, eldercare, animal welfare, and other issues.
The Give Together event will also include a reflection on Dr. King’s legacy of service.
Families with children in grades 5-12 should register for session 1 (10-11:30 a.m.) or session 2 (12:30-2 p.m.). Session 3, at 3-4 p.m., is for teens in grades 9-12 who need to complete community service hours.
Financial literacy workshops will also be held during those sessions. One workshop covers basic financial decision-making skills for students in grades 3-5. The other one focuses on paychecks, taxes, and other real-world responsibilities for students in grades 9-12.
Working on service projects as a family “allows children and teens to witness first-hand how fun and valuable volunteering can be,” Volunteer Fairfax says.
