Watch out for solicitors on Annandale streets–It’s probably a scam

A reader reports that an individual recently seen collecting money in Annandale for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America is most likely a scam artist. A youngish man, looking to be in the mid-20s or low-30s dressed in business attire with a shaved head, was spotted at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and John Marr Drive (on the side of the Hess station) asking for contributions about 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1.

“Something didn’t look right about it,” the reader says, so he e-mailed BGCA and received this response: “Members of our clubs are not authorized to fund raise. Clubs maintain development staff and boards of directors to raise funds. In almost every circumstance, fundraising does not occur on streets, door-to-door, or in most public places.”

Thanks for the warning!

  1. FYI This same individual was seen soliciting at that intersection on August 28th and, according to police, this solicitor is legitimate.
