What to do with old Christmas trees

It’s probably time to chuck that old Christmas tree, no matter how pretty is still looks, as the Fire Department warns dried-out trees are fire hazards.

If you had purchased a live tree with an intact root ball, you could plant it outside and enjoy it for years, as well as add value to your neighborhood.

If you’re stuck with a dead tree that’s less than eight feet, you can leave it on the curb for regular pickup service on your normal collection date for trash and recycling collection. There is no extra charge.

Christmas trees can also be recycled during the first two weeks in January at either the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex. There is a small processing fee of $1 per tree. Be sure to remove tree stands, ornaments, tinsel, and lights before recycling.
