Community pools in our neck of the woods seems to be
struggling to make ends meet every summer, as it’s getting harder to replace
members who move away or feel they don’t enjoy a pool as much after their
children grow up. Meanwhile, many of the pools and bathhouses were built 50
years ago and require expensive renovations.

The Annandale Swim and Tennis Club (ASTC) on Little River
Turnpike recently got some help from the Thompson Creek Window Co., which
donated and installed six new windows—just in time for the Northern Virginia Swimming League’s (NVSL) All-Stars meet on Aug. 2. That project also included improvements
to the snack bar and clubhouse.
Thompson Creek, the same company that donated new windows to
the family of Navy Yard shooting victim Martin Bodrog, had reached out to NVSL
to see which local pools needed the most help, said company spokesperson Katie
Sushko. The company learned that ASTC’s windows were in terrible shape and
the pool was preparing to host the All-Stars meet, which draws hundreds of
swimmers and family members to the pool from all over the area.

Thompson Creek also provided a new gutter system to replace
the badly damaged gutters at the Hunt Valley Pool in Springfield. That project was
completed in time for the NVSL All-Star Relays meet at that pool July 16.
