Winter storm could be a record breaker
With more than a foot of snow covering Annandale already (at 2 p.m. Saturday), we could be snowbound for days. According to the National Weather Service, we could be in the midst of the biggest winter storm to hit the D.C. area since February 2003 when we had 16 inches of snow. The storm could also set a record for December, beating the 12 inches of snow that fell on Dec. 17, 1932.
Area transportation officials are advising people to stay off the roads, but if you’re going stir crazy already and you are able to drive, the Fairfax County Park Authority suggests heading to a local park for winter sports. Two Annandale parks have trails perfect for cross country skiing. The two-mile section of the Cross County Trail connecting the Wakefield Recreation Center (accessible from Braddock Road) and Lake Accotink Park in Springfield winds through the woods with views of the lake.
Mason District Park on Columbia Pike offers a hilly one-quarter mile loop trail with a stream valley, meadow, pond, and woodlands. It also has some good hills for sledding.
There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that schools will be open this week. In case you’re one of the lucky (unlucky?) ones with a job you have to get to on Monday, the Fairfax County website has a list of home day care providers in the Annandale area.
Wow, this is pretty crazy weather! According to http://www.citymelt.com/city/Virginia/Annandale+Cdp-VA.html it looks like Annandale, VA averages about 7 inches of snowfall in December. This storm has already far exceeded the average.
I'm looking for a big hill for snowboarding in the area.. anyone know of any nice big hills?
We used to go sledding on the Pinecrest Golf Course, but don't know if it would be good for snowboarding. If you try it, let us know.
