With no big local July 4 events, expect a lot of neighborhood fireworks

A fireworks stand on Little River Turnpike in Annandale.

The Annandale Blog wishes everyone a fun and safe Fourth of July—but don’t forget, we’re still in the midst of a pandemic.

There are no public fireworks events scheduled locally, so as you enjoy your backyard DIY fireworks shows, don’t invite too many people and be sure to practice social distancing. Wear a face mask if you’re too close to people and bring hand sanitizer.
Be especially vigilant if you’re going to the fireworks show on the National Mall. There will be flyovers by the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy Blue Angels jet, and the fireworks will start at 9:07.
D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham urges people to avoid the Mall, as large crowds make it easier for the coronavirus to spread.
In general, the more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spreading. Indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces, and spending time with people who don’t wear a mask increases your risk of being infected.
If you’re hosting your own fireworks show, keep in mind the following safety tips
  • Only use fireworks that are legal in Virginia. Fireworks that explode, emit a flame or sparks higher than 12 feet, or act as a projectile are prohibited by the Fairfax County Fire Prevention Code.
  • Read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.
  • A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix and should not be used together.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
  • Finally, try not to scare your pets. Put them in a safe, interior room to minimize the sound, and make sure your pet has an ID tag in case it runs off.

  1. There is nothing to celebrate. Government officials are taking away our freedoms by decree. People are too brainwashed to realize the extent to which they are being deceived.

    1. Don't fall for that "go on" from Mr. Goldbarg, its not sincere…he ceems to be more interested in being cute than actually building on the subject…he hates Confederate war criminals but apparently has no problem with Union war criminals…he has no problem with a building being named after Ronald Wilson Reagan the great crack cocaine monger of the 80's

  2. The el Ra Jewel guy is nuts, nothing he says ever makes any sense, I am not sure why the blog does not delete him. He is cuckoo for cocoa pops.

    1. interesting…what exactly am eye saying that doesn't make sense? maybe you could help me make sense of it

  3. The reason why Ellie doesn't delete el Ra Jewel is because he makes the non-"progressive" readers appear all crazy. Ellie has been deleting my comments or not approving them for publication for years, and I'm a centrist who disagrees with some of this content.

    1. Comments that express an opposing viewpoint are published unless they anonymously attack another reader, promote harmful behavior, or reiterate what someone else already wrote.

    2. FYI, the Annandale Blog doesn't let all my comments go up…and eye have no problem with that…now what exactly am eye saying that is crazy?

    3. FYI sometimes if you post sequential comments too quickly they both or one gets deleted, happens to me all the time.

  4. This blog is a great platform to read about the incompetence of our public servers.

i dont feel it is censoring one opinion over another, and above all – we must remember that we are neighbors after all.
We all want the best for our community and our neighborhood, even though we sometimes dont agree on how to get there.

As for celebrating this amazing country independence day –
I find it ironic that Hispanic immigrants, Muslim immigrants, African immigrants, Asian immigrants, in fact, almost all immigrants are so proud and happy to celebrate this country, but the only one's who are ashamed and unhappy with it are the original, guilt-consumed white people who made it so great to begin with.

    1. when the Islamic Black-a-Moors were expelled from Spain in 1492, the devils columbus and the spaniards arrived in our beloved A-Moor-Ricas the lands of the USA was flooded with the worst europe had to offer with the foulest behavior imaginable…the "founding fathers" were wise men but they were lacking in qualifying to be a human being, being the bloodsuckers of the poor that they were…ben franklin tried to con/scare people with tales of French boats raiding the coast privateered by "blacks, mulattos and others" as he put it…this is what made North America so great…the rebellious melting pot…eye just wonder how are white folks guilt consumed when there was a John Brown who got snitched on by a free "Black" man named Haywood Shepard…the rebellious melting pot continues to be the greatness of the USA

    2. As a muslim trans woman, i completely disagree.

This is the only place people like me can prosper, work, school and live fulfilled life.

i could never practice my religion, be trans and express my woman power anywhere else

    3. its nice to play make believe but in reality, you cannot be Muslim and "trans" at the same time…but you prolly already know that

  5. Happy 7th of July! Posters here showed a divergence of opinion, the opportunity to criticize the government and not get imprisoned, a variety of faith beliefs, depiction of press freedoms… and we all survived right here in our corner of Fairfax. Thanks to all of you, Anon, elRa, Adam, and ABlog for demonstrating what is still possible in the United States.

    1. you continue typing proper english and keeping your mouth shut like a good slave…owl continue typing in slang english, the most divine form of english, and keep on mercilessly spilling the beans for those who aren't woke enough or brave enough to speak…owl be the patriot and you be the one who needs to be rescued…owl be the 5%….you can be the 85%
