Updated Nov. 20: A house fire at 3229 Alice Court in the Broyhill Park neighborhood in Mason District claimed the life of daycare provider Susy Soliz.

The fire started at about 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 18, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports. It was started by an electrical malfunction within a multiplug extension cord in a second-floor bedroom. Damages were estimated at $93,750.

Soliz was the only one home at the time. Her daughter, a graduate of Falls Church High School, was away at college and her teenage son was at his father’s house, a friend of the family says.

The friend set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral costs.

An immigrant from Bolivia, Soliz has run Susy’s Home Daycare for at least 10 years serving children age 2 months to age 12, the friend says. “She along with her assistants made sure the children had the best care possible.”

“She was caring, humble, and very understanding,” the friend says. “She was loved by all.”

Falls Church High School Principal Ben Nowak informed the community via email that “clinicians and counselors are working to support both the family and those impacted by this tragic loss.”

“Any death is difficult for children to understand,” Nowak said. “For that reason, we hope you will listen to your son or daughter as they may want to discuss this sad news. Additionally, our school counselors are also available for any student who may want assistance surrounding loss.”

The daughter, Susy, was part of the Youth Imaging Art program.

  1. Please consider donating to her two wonderful children, Susy and David. She was a beautiful person inside and out. May she rest in peace.
