A table setting symbolizes the meaning of Memorial Day
Memorial Day is about more than a splash in the pool and a cookout. A table setting at an Annandale trail reminds us of the holiday’s true meaning – the remembrance of those who died in service to their country.
A sign explains the table setting: “A small table set for one, symbolizing isolation of the absent service member.”
The white tablecloth represents “the pure intentions of service members who responded to the country’s call to arms.” The red flower symbolizes the blood shed by service members. Salt sprinkled on the plate represents “the tears shed by waiting families,” and the upside-down glass symbolizes what “the missing and fallen cannot partake.”
The table is located at the Slade Run Drive entrance to the Holmes Run Stream Valley Trail.
Awesome!!
I do not have the words — other than ‘patriotic – lovely – sincere’.
Thank YOU,
Beautiful.
while this is a nice article attempting to illustrate the POW/MIA or Missing Man Table that represent many of our families, it is not complete; table elements are missing.
