There was a police-involved shooting early this morning in Alexandria’s West End following a homicide and barricade situation at the Canterbury Square Condominiums.

The police were called at about 4 a.m. for a report of a female who had been shot, said Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire at a media briefing on May 18.

When police arrived, they removed two people from the doorway of an apartment, then found a man barricaded in a room inside the apartment with the victim. The suspect refused to comply with repeated verbal commands to exit the room, McGuire said.

He eventually emerged, charging at the officers and running at full speed down the hallway. “Two service weapons were fired by the officers. The suspect was immediately brought into custody and was given life-saving measures,” McGuire said.

Officers located the female victim, who had been shot multiple times. They also gave her life-saving measures. Both the victim and the suspect were declared deceased at the scene.

According to McGuire, the incident involved family members. It was confined to an apartment at 27 Canterbury Square in the Landmark area, between Duke Street and Holmes Run.

The officers involved have seven and a half years and eight years of service, he said. They are on administrative leave pending the outcome of ongoing investigations of the incident.
