Alis Wang appointed to Planning Commission

Alis Wang

Mason Supervisor Andres Jimenez has appointed Alis Wang to the Fairfax County Planning Commission.

“Alis is no stranger to our community and really understands the nuances surrounding land use development and planning,” Jimenez said. “She has a tremendous resume and I’m thrilled that she’s lending her expertise to the Planning Commission.”

Wang succeeds Daren Shumate who served as the Mason District representative on the Planning Commission since January 2023. Jimenez appointed Shumate to the Fairfax County Economic Advisory Commission.

Wang has served on the Mason District Land Use Committee, the board of the Bailey’s Crossroads Seven Corners Revitalization Corporation, the 2020 Mason District Site-Specific Plan Amendment Task Force, the Fairfax County Human Services Council, the 2021 Fairfax County Redistricting Advisory Committee, and the board of the Lake Barcroft Association.

She is a senior principal at the KBR consulting firm in Vienna, where she advises on geopolitical risk and strategy.

Wang was born in Virginia to immigrants from Taiwan and has lived in Fairfax County since 2015. She holds a bachelor’s degree in public and international affairs from Princeton University, a master’s degree in international relations from the London School of Economics, and a master’s degree in politics from New York University.

“I look forward to representing Mason District on the Planning Commission and working with Supervisor Jimenez’s office on land use policies and plans that benefit our district,” Wang said.

  1. It’s too bad the supervisor has not put a person with a background in urban planning or architecture. Putting folks on the planning commission without those appropriate credentials will lead to failure in the future for sustainable and well planned communities to thrive in Mason.

While Ms Wang has impressive credentials, these are not necessarily well aligned with the skill sets needed for the built environment and that is very unfortunate. I am alway amazed but not, how inexperienced and naive the leadership is in Mason.

  2. Can we “plan” the elimination of illegal boarding houses? There’s a 2BR rambler near Heming and Axton that should have a hotel sign on it. There are no fewer than 15 people sleeping there. Junked out cars parked in the driveway, on grass, and in street. Ffx police drive by it daily and refuse to write a parking ticket for expired registrations. Yet numerous complaints filed over 3 years and zero action taken. All the “planning” in the world is pointless if there’s no enforcement of existing code.

    1. Mason is lawless and the bad actors know it. There is no longer any enforcement in Mason, just property tax increases. This makes the BoS complicit to criminal behavior and should be help accountable in a court of law.

  3. I hate when crimes are being committed and there isn’t a way to get the problem resolved .
I have attended a few of the CAC meetings. I have mentioned a few issues and they have been followed up and resolved. Police attend and I believe run the meetings. An email is [email protected].
They are usually held the first Tuesday of the month. Lately the locations have varied to allow easier access for individuals. I’m looking at an email the two individuals Mike Porth, CAC Chair and Sean Bonyun, CAC Vice Chair. You might want to send an email ask about where the next meeting will be-I do not have a phone number.
